Overview
The Fellowship in Gynaecologic Oncology is a fully accredited two-year subspecialty program, with a potential third year of dedicated for research, through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The clinical program has a large volume of radical surgery as well as minimally invasive surgical procedures, multidisciplinary clinics and rounds, and a formal teaching curriculum offered through weekly academic half day sessions, multidisciplinary tumour board meetings, oncology academic rounds, and journal club meetings. British Columbia has a population-based cancer control organization, and cancer care is standardized across the province. This provincial cancer program is the ideal platform upon which to conduct teaching and research. Our multidisciplinary affiliations with pathology, medical and radiation oncology, urology, general surgery, plastic surgery, and the BC Cancer Agency Hereditary Cancer Program contribute to a tremendous clinical and research experience for our trainees.
During the 2-year clinical program, Fellows are expected to be involved in at least one research project with subsequent presentation at a national meeting and publication in a peer-reviewed journal. An additional year of academic training (such as basic or translational research, medical education, epidemiology, biostatistics, public health) is recommended, and there are many opportunities for participation in clinical and translational research through our provincial multidisciplinary group.
Upon completion of training, the fellow is expected to have the knowledge, clinical and surgical skills required for independent practice in Gynaecologic Oncology in Canada. As well as providing expert clinical care, the gynaecologic oncologist will be prepared to contribute to administrative, educational, and research activities in the field of gynaecologic oncology. The specific requirements are detailed in the Objectives of Training (OTR) from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as well as rotation-specific goals and objectives from the University of British Columbia. These are in accordance with the CanMEDS Physician Competency Framework for the 7 roles that all trainees are expected to acquire: Medical Expert, Communicator, Collaborator, Manager, Health Advocate, Scholar, and Professional.
