This unique and innovative 6 month program is offered to practicing Canadian gynecologists who wish to develop expertise in the assessment and management of women chronic and complex vulvovaginal disorders. The program runs from January to June inclusive in the years that it is offered.
The advanced training program will provide opportunities to achieve: (1) competence and expertise in the assessment, diagnosis and management of a range of vulvar disorders; and (2) competence in assessing the impact of these disorders on a woman’s holistic health. The trainee will be primarily working out of the BC Centre for Vulvar Health (BCCVH). The BCCVH offers ambulatory multidisciplinary and holistic health care to women with vulvar disorders. The BCCVH offers 5 core clinical programs: the Vulvar Disease Clinic; the Vulvodynia Program, the Vulvar Intra-epithelial Neoplasia Clinic, Vulvar Oncology Clinic and sexual medicine for cancer survivorship. The BCCVH is located in the Gordon and Leslie Diamond Health Care Centre, Vancouver General Hospital. The Centre runs 36 clinics per month and services >1000 women per year. The trainee will work as part of a multidisciplinary team (clinical care coordinator, registered nurse, registered psychologist, registered physiotherapist, sexual medicine clinician, gynecologists, gynecologic oncologists) 3-4 days per week.
The Advanced Training will be undertaken with the supervision of an identified clinical expert to collaborate with the trainee to personalize their learning objectives and arrange for the trainee to attend the appropriate clinics with other related health care practitioners. Depending on the trainees interests there will be opportunity to spend time with allied health care workers (Colposcopists, Dermatologists, Chronic Pelvic Pain specialists, Sexual Medicine clinicians). There will be opportunities for surgical training in day care procedures.
The trainee has protected time for research and teaching. The trainee will have time and support to complete an original research project in the field of vulvovaginal disorders. The trainee will also be involved in teaching residents in the BCCVH. The ultimate goal of the Program is to develop leaders in clinical care, teaching, and research related to vulvovaginal health.
The next opening in the Sexual Medicine/Vulvovaginal Disorders Advanced Training program is for January-June, 2025. Strong preference will be given to a candidate who has documented support from their hospital or university to offer vulvovaginal services at their site.
